Sounds in our School

23rd Mar 2023

This afternoon we became scientists investigating the different sounds we could hear inside and outside the school. To begin with we explored how different sounds are made and practised listening to quiet/ loud/ high and low sounds. Outdoors we listened carefully visiting different locations in the school. At each site we closed our eyes and listened for sounds. We discussed what we heard and predicted what made the sound. The children were quick to identify the sound of the birds and were able to follow the direction of the sound to spots some of the birds. At another site in the playground dogs barking was the loudest sound while moving towards the car park children identified the sounds of cars passing the school. Above us children heard an aeroplane but this could not be seen due to cloud cover. Moving toward the assembly hall the sound of children doing PE inside was initially louder than the rain drops hitting our hoods or the fan on the wall outside the toilets. Our sound trail got us to think about the importance of being able to hear. We know that sound travels from a source whether this is a living thing or a machine. It will be fun next week making our own instruments to create sound through striking, plucking or shaking.🙂
