Everyone in Room 5 had a great time at the Ulster Museum yesterday as part of our learning about Ancient Egypt.
When we are arrived we started off with a session about Ancient Egypt which was led by a lady called Jackie. We explored many artefacts such as canopic jars, scarab beetles as well as having the opportunity to handle some very ancient artefacts (canopic jar lid over 3000 years old and linen cloths over 1000 years old). We also got to smell and see what frankincense and myrrh were like. This was particularly interesting at this time of the year as we remember the gifts of the Wise Men in the Christmas Story. We learnt that both came from trees. Then we had the opportunity to move around different stations to work out from the given materials what the job was that the Egyptian person had. There was a scribe, an embalmer, a jewellery maker, an artist and someone who made makeup. It was so interesting to see the materials and implements they used for each role.
Next we loved to a discovery part of the museum which was also very hands-on. We wrote our names in hieroglyphs and also explored other areas such as WW2, castle times, seeing a house from Victorian times through to WW2 and then to a modern home. We got to dress up and play with Victorian toys too as well as hear about some shoes from around the world.
Finally, we headed upstairs to see the mummy of Tukabuti. Although this seemed pretty gruesome, it was a highlight among the children! We learnt about how she died and how her body was preserved and how it was found.
We had a brilliant day and the whole experience helped bring to life some of what we’ve learned this past term. 😊😊
