Room 1 spent the week exploring and investigating facts about polar bears. We carried out a blubber glove experiment to find out if a layer of fat would help keep a polar bear warm. The children were able to identify that their hand was warmer using the “blubber” glove.
Children made their own polar bears with black dough and discussed how the polar bears skin was black under its fur. They added straws for fur and used a torch to reflect light. We discussed how our non fiction text told us that they polar bears fur was really translucent and that the reflected light made the fur look white.
Outside we explored camouflage. We couldn’t investigate this in an Arctic setting but used our own environment to search for coloured worms(wool worms). We discovered that bright colours were easiest to find and that green worms were camouflaged. We agreed that animals which were coloured white would be hardest to find in polar areas. In our art we created images of polar bears against a background of the Northern Lights.
