Science through Stories
As part of our World Book Day celebrations we used some material released by CCEA linked to the story of “Elmer” the patchwork elephant. We considered how Elmer used camouflage to hide. Outside we worked with a partner to search for different coloured wool caterpillars. This encouraged us to use our observational and recording skills. Looking at our results the children decided that birds would quickly find the pink and blue caterpillars and that yellow, green and brown ones had a better chance of survival.
We used this experience to link to our learning about polar bears. The children used pastels to design new environments for polar bears to explore. The children agreed that polar bears should stay amongst the snow and ice if they are to hide and hunt for food.
