Microbits
Room 5 boys and girls enjoyed another visit from Roy yesterday. Roy is from Sentinus (STEM) and he’s always a welcome visitor in our school. Yesterday the children loved coding microbits to control a car. They learnt about sending commands, sequencing and repeating instructions. Everyone was able to make their car move in response to a sound and other commands. Well done everyone. Super coding! The video below shows what we hope to achieve over the next few weeks (coding the cars in sync with each other…easier said than done!!) but we will create our own themes and backdrops eg it could be something relating to our inventors topic. Last year we had numerous themes from football, formula 1, the Wild West etc but Roy shared new ideas and rather than create a physical backdrop we’ll extend our ICT skills to using a digital backdrop with the green screen. Lots for us to consider but we enjoy learning and being creative.
Roy then went on to share with us how computing and coding is so important for jobs in the future. We tried to figure out jobs that don’t require any level of digital technology and couldn’t think of many. Roy was inspiring both girls and boys to enjoy engineering and promised to return to take a session on flight as he was shared his knowledge on Bombardier (known as Shorts years ago). Sometimes we love how our learning takes us in different directions!
