Making Bread

18th Mar 2019

We had lots of questions about how bread was made so we decided to try to make some for ourselves.  We followed a recipe to make white bread taking turns to add all the dry ingredients (flour, salt and yeast). The children used lots of descriptive language to explain how this changed when the warm water was added. It was hard work to stir the mixture. The recipe instructed us to leave the mixture covered in a warm place to allow the yeast to start working. It was surprising to see how quickly the mixture expanded in the bowl.  We then transferred the mixture into cooking trays to bake in the oven.  After half an hour we had some warm bread to eat which smelt and tasted delicious.

Making bread has made us aware of some chemical changes which happen when ingredients are mixed.  Thanks to science and technology we no longer need to rely on making bread by hand. This however was a fun activity and one I would recommend for home, although the batch of dough could be spilt into 3 trays or made into small crusty rolls.
