Let’s investigate
We explored the importance of yeast today using a fun experiment involving balloons. We knew from baking bread that the ingredients rose after the yeast was added.
The experiment suggested we added sugar and warm water to the yeast. So together we set up the experiment with two bottles one with yeast and water and the other with yeast, sugar and warm water. Both bottles were set in a basin of warm water weighted down with play dough. We watched as the balloons inflated. We noted that the bottle with the sugar and yeast inflated most. In this bottle we could see the yeast changing (reacting) and worked out that a gas was being released to inflate the balloon.
