Investigating Snow
Today was the perfect opportunity for Room 1 to use their scientific skills to investigate snow. After playing in the snow this morning the children were asked to prove that heat was needed to melt snow. We predicted that the best place to melt snow was indoors and thought that the window ledge above the buddy bench might also cause the snow to melt as the sun was shining on it. The children agreed that the coldest place was over towards the mud kitchen and since the water tray had frozen over suggested leaving snow there. The children worked together to fill some clear containers these were placed on our chosen sites. We observed the snow and by lunch time we all agreed that the snow indoors had melted. The snow on window ledge outside had partly melted while that in the water tray remained unchanged as no sunlight could reach this to heat it.
While waiting for the changes to occur with the snow we learnt a rhyme about snowflakes and watched an interesting video clip which taught us some facts about snowflakes and how they are formed. Just like us no two snowflakes are the same!
