Day 1 Gortatole Trip

13th May 2024

Although it was wet, we had the best first day on our residential trip. After arriving and getting a tour of the centre, we made our beds and had our lunch. Everyone worked together in each room to help out the duvet cover which was a success!!

Our first activity was either caving or archery/ bushcraft.

The children loved every aspect of archery as they learned how to hold the bow and aim to shoot the target. In bushcraft the children learnt about the different kinds of wood used to light a fire: tinder, kindling and fuel. Every group successfully lit their fire and boiled a jug of water! They learnt that boiling water sterilises it. Great team work and super skills everyone! Bear Grylls wouldn’t have a look in!!!

For the other two groups the activity was caving. We suited up and headed underground to explore the caves. Everyone challenged themselves to try something new and we learned so much about the formation of the local landscape. Some boys and girls were very adventurous and crawled through the small spaces while others were happy to watch and encourage their friends. Such a wonderful experience and a great first day had by all.

In the evening we completed an orienteering task around the grounds. This was great for our teamwork, communication and cooperation skills.

A fantastic first day all round 🤩
