Coding in R5

25th Nov 2022

This week we were completing a Scratch Jr coding task…we were creating a game. We linked the game to The Street Child, our class novel, linked to our topic of the Victorians.

The children searched a suitable backdrop of a workhouse so we used this for our setting. We discussed sprites and decided on 3 characters e.g. Jim Jarvis (the child in workhouse) and then the Master and Matron. The purpose of the game was to get Jim into bed in the dormitory without being caught by the Master or Matron and code these characters accurately.

We watched the video resources from Nerve Centre (our ICT partners) to familiarise ourselves with the interface and features of the app. We progressed to including the setting and the sprites. We edited the sprites and explored how to change their size. Then we began coding one sprite and explaining how to send the message from the arrow (start button) to Jim Jarvis who we are trying to move across the screen.

Meanwhile, our next step is to code the Master and Matron who will move continually and then insert our 'game over' and 'winner' slides. There's lots of opportunity to be creative as the children have come up with great ideas for alternatives to the 'game over/ winner' slides.

When we have completed this task we will give the children the opportunity to create their own game again with their own theme - already some have suggested how they would like to create a game linked to their reading book e.g. Granny stealing the crown jewels in Gangsta Granny!
